Bringing Back the Blackouts?
Last year Nicaragua experienced “rolling blackouts,” planned outages in different parts of the country. Every week the newspaper reported on when residents could expect the outages in their neighborhoods: 2 to 7 p.m. or 5 to 10 p.m.
When Amber and I came to Nicaragua in March, we came prepared — with a battery charger and inverter. But it seemed that Nicaragua’s energy situation had improved: no planned outages so far.
Well, that could be changing. Last night we were “officially” welcomed to Nicaragua with our first blackout. It lasted from 5 o’clock to 9:30. And as “prepared” as I was with the charger and inverter, I hadn’t bothered to buy the actual battery yet! So we sat around in the dark for four and a half hours! (It was actually kind of peaceful!)
Today I’ll be making a trip to the hardware store to buy our battery…hoping we won’t have to use it every night, but prepared in case we do.
