Remembering What Brought Us Here
I had a write a short bio for the CFCI home office in Omaha this afternoon. They just wanted a paragraph answering this question:
“How did God call you to Christ for the City?”
Here was my response:
“I distinctly remember the first time I felt that God was calling us to serve in Nicaragua with Christ for the City. My wife, Amber, and I were on our first short-term mission trip together with our church in Charleston, SC in August 2005. The trip was a medical mission to Nicaragua. I remember that first bus ride to the clinic site in a Managua slum. We stepped off the bus. The smell of raw sewage hit me. It was hot: 95 degrees and humid. It was also loud. Children were everywhere, reaching for us for candy or hugs. There was a mob of people, Nicaraguans and “cheles.” It was overwhelming. I turned around and Amber was just stepping off the bus. And she was weeping. But they weren’t tears of sadness; they were tears of joy.
We were exactly where God intended us to be.
That realization hit us as soon as we stepped off the bus. God wants us here in Nicaragua – serving Him and serving the people. From that point on our goal has been to come to Nicaragua to be full-time missionaries with Christ for the City International. Our dreams became a reality when we arrived here in March. What a blessing and a privilege to be doing God’s work in a country we fell in love with at first sight!”
It’s nice to remember how God brought us here!
