It’s a Web 2.0 World

Oct 8th, 2008 by Nathan | 0

I’m still jazzed about an experience I had a couple of weeks ago involving Twitter and the domain/web host I use for all of my blogs, GoDaddy.com.

Here’s the story.

I got a notice about an unexpected charge on my credit card from GoDaddy. Fifty-five dollars. Apparently, I had gone over the space limitations for one of my websites and was therefore billed for it.

So I called GoDaddy.

No luck.

I got the problem resolved on the technical side, but no refund.

What’s an angry, chronic-foot-in-mouth-diseased-guy to do?

In the old days I would have fired off a nasty-gram (snail nail pre-1997, email post-1997). And most likely, nothing would have come of it. But in the Web 2.0 world we live in today, I decided to tell all of my Twitter friends about my bad experience. That’ll show ‘em! Here’s what I wrote:

“GoDaddy charged me $55 for going over on my blog’s bandwidth. No warning. I’ve been a loyal customer for 2 yrs. Way to go customer service!”

OK, so I was a little harsh.

And maybe a little unfair.

But I was mad, so gimmie a break!

I felt slightly better, but definitely resigned myself to the fact that I had lost $55 by making a dumb mistake with my web host (yes, I admit it, I did mess up!).

Then I got an email.

It was from GoDaddy.

To be precise, it was from @GoDaddyGuy (if you use Twitter, you understand this). And in the email @GoDaddyGuy explained very clearly why I was charged. However, because GoDaddy.com was sorry for any miscommunication or mix-up, they refunded the $55!

Why the change of heart?

Twitter!

Not only did they give me the refund, but they explained a way to reorganize the domains I have registered with them to save me even more money!

I promptly apologized and posted a new tweet singing GoDaddy’s praises:

“I take back everything I said about GoDaddy. They saw my tweet and gave me a refund! Thanks, @GoDaddyGuy for your email and great service!”

I know this is all very silly. But it shows what a wonderful, connected, Web 2.0 world we live in! The possibilities are endless…
