Yesterday was the 29th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua. Amber and I “celebrated” the occasion by going to the beach with friend and CFCI intern David. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the drive from our house to the beach is only 32 miles. And it was well worth [...]

Nicaragua is dealing with major economic woes. The price of food and water is going up daily, it seems. (By my estimation, prices have gone up by about 20 to 30 percent since we arrived in March.)
And gasoline is now over $5.00 per gallon (that’s $5.00 per gallon).
I know that a lot of Americans are [...]

I received an email this morning from Linda in our “Link Group” at Seacoast asking about how we’re doing after Tropical Storm Alma. I realized that I never updated you on the direct impact of the storm on us here in Managua. (Thank you, Linda, for the reminder!)
The CFCI missionaries here were not [...]

I read some interesting articles about rising food prices (not just in Nicaragua, but worldwide), the consequences (especially on the poor), and political fallout. Nicaragua was center stage on the issue with the recent “Latin American Food Summit.” Here are the articles:
“Belts Tighten in Nicaragua” - Los Angeles Times
“Ortega Leads Anti-US Critique at Latin American [...]

I found an interesting article today on the “Citizens Power Councils” set up by Daniel Ortega’s Sandinista government here in Nicaragua. I’ll withhold my opinion on “CPC” and the political situation; I’ll just say that it’s an interesting debate, we’re paying attention, and praying for a positive outcome. Here’s the link to the [...]

Signs, signs, and more signs. On every street corner, in front of every shopping center.
We’re here in South Carolina — and what a great time to be here. The big Republican primary is Saturday. The Dems are here campaigning for January 26. Unfortunately, we’re registered in North Carolina now. But [...]

I found some great information on Nicaragua from the book Operation World by Patrick Johnstone and Jason Mandryk — essential for every (missions minded) Christian’s library. I don’t know if you’ll find the facts and figures as fascinating as I do, but you might pick up an interesting tidbit about the country we’re going [...]

With everything going on recently I never had a chance to write about the big vote this weekend. On Sunday the people of Costa Rica voted to pass the new free trade agreement (known as “TLC” in Costa Rica, “CAFTA” in the U.S.). I don’t usually get into politics on the Blog (that inevitably gets [...]

I read a great interview with Rick Warren on Meet the Press today. It’s part politics, part history lesson, and part coming together as Christians to change the entire world. Very interesting stuff. Here’s the link.

I found an article this morning on Costa Rica’s new border enforcement law designed to prevent illegal immigrants - mainly Nicaraguans - from entering or staying in the country. (Click here to open the article.) I understand the desire to control the border - obviously the U.S. is debating the very same issue presently - [...]
