Nicaraguan Politicking

Oct 27th, 2008 by Nathan | 0

The United States isn’t the only country in the middle of campaign season — Nicaragua goes to the polls this November too.
It’s not a presidential election year, but alcalde elections are taking place across the country. “Alcalde” is Spanish for mayor, but this position is actually more like mayor, governor, and future presidential candidate (at [...]

A Day at the Beach for the Sandinista Revolution Anniversary

Jul 20th, 2008 by Nathan | 0

Yesterday was the 29th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua. Amber and I “celebrated” the occasion by going to the beach with friend and CFCI intern David. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the drive from our house to the beach is only 32 miles. And it was well worth [...]

The CFCI missionaries here were not [...]

Nicaragua in the News

May 11th, 2008 by Nathan | 0

I read some interesting articles about rising food prices (not just in Nicaragua, but worldwide), the consequences (especially on the poor), and political fallout.  Nicaragua was center stage on the issue with the recent “Latin American Food Summit.”  Here are the articles:
“Belts Tighten in Nicaragua” - Los Angeles Times
“Ortega Leads Anti-US Critique at Latin American [...]

“Citizens Power Councils” Stir Fear of Dictatorship

May 4th, 2008 by Nathan | 0

I found an interesting article today on the “Citizens Power Councils” set up by Daniel Ortega’s Sandinista government here in Nicaragua. I’ll withhold my opinion on “CPC” and the political situation; I’ll just say that it’s an interesting debate, we’re paying attention, and praying for a positive outcome. Here’s the link to the [...]
